Shaping the Future of Youngsters with Career Ready

We are delighted to announce we have now completed the four-week internship programme with Career Ready and have had the pleasure of welcoming two interns, Gemma and Cally, to our team at DPS.

They were tasked with organising a DPS Family Fun Day, and we are excited to implement the fantastic ideas they have developed.

We encouraged Gemma and Cally to approach this task as they would any other project at DPS. They have had the opportunity to visit various departments throughout the company, allowing them to gain a comprehensive understanding of our operations. Under the expert guidance of Lewis Ranshaw, our Project Manager, they have been led through each step of project management. Lewis has ensured they gain valuable experience, including learning how to plan and quote customers and prepare the appropriate documentation.

Lewis commented:
“Participating in the Career Ready Charity programme has been truly rewarding. This organisation connects businesses with young people, offering them valuable real-world experience through paid internships.

The interns received a comprehensive overview of an engineering company, learning that diverse skills can contribute to a successful team. We entrusted them to manage the 2024 DPS Family & Friends Day project, involving client meetings, budget discussions, and collaboration with DPS departments.

A highlight was visiting the North British Distillery Complex, where they saw our lighting upgrade project and learned about modern engineering standards. We are grateful to Steven Gentles for this insightful visit.

This programme has been enriching for everyone at DPS. Seeing the potential of these young individuals is inspiring, and we’re committed to supporting their future success in the engineering sector.”

Corrie has served as a mentor in the programme this year, sharing her extensive knowledge of health and safety. She has guided Gemma and Cally, imparting this crucial knowledge to ensure that we can all have fun and stay safe simultaneously.

Corrie shared her thoughts:
“Cally and Gemma’s internship over the past four weeks has been exceptional. They grew significantly in confidence, communication, and customer service skills through various stakeholder interactions.

Their major project was planning a Family Fun Day for DPS Group, where they took initiative, delegated tasks, and improved their Excel skills. Their final presentation showcased their enjoyment, knowledge gained, and new skills developed.

The internship also helped them explore potential career paths. Cally’s interest in engineering was rekindled during a site visit to the North British Distillery and a discussion with Project Manager Lewis Ranshaw.

I look forward to staying connected and seeing how they apply their DPS experience in the future.”

During their time with the Finance and Admin department, the interns have gained invaluable hands-on experience in crucial financial operations such as managing budgets and cash flow. They have actively participated in the procurement process by obtaining quotes and placing orders with suppliers, ensuring all activities align with our stringent ISO guidelines.

Melanie added:
“This experience has been great for both the interns and me. They’ve gained a lot of practical knowledge and skills, and I’ve learned from their fresh perspectives and innovative approaches. From day one, both interns fit right into our team and tackled every task with enthusiasm. Their positive attitudes and eagerness to learn made a big impact. It’s been a pleasure having them on my team, even if it was just for a short time. Their contributions were valuable, and we’ll definitely miss having them around.”

Cally shared her thoughts:
“Completing this internship at the DPS group has been an eye-opening experience, filled with valuable lessons and meaningful connections. I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow in such a supportive environment. I have learned to carry out various projects within the Finance and Admin department. Thank you for helping and inspiring me throughout this journey.”

Gemma reflected on her time with us:
“Reflecting on my internship, I’ve built up my confidence, meaningful connections, and developed new skills which will benefit me after I leave. Everybody helped to ensure I felt welcome and appreciated, as well as assisting me in areas I found challenging and worked with me until I understood what to do. This experience has helped me grow, both professionally and personally, which has left me excited and prepared for the challenges and opportunities yet to come.”

We are thrilled to see their hard work come to fruition and look forward to the success of the DPS Family Fun Day!
